The past haunts these highly allusive poems, rich with thoughtful, precise images that convey “numinous ambiguities,” as in the title poem. A Circle of Bones is a welcome addition to 21st-century American poetry. — Clifton Snider

Description

As I recall it, back in the mid 90’s I got this crazy idea to put on a very casual poetry workshop in San Pedro (final resting spot of Bukowski). It was held weekly and didn’t last too long (I was younger), but once I’d settled back and took each individual as they came, it turned out to be helpful, mostly. One of the best things that came out of that workshop was getting to know Gil. I think Gil had sent me poetry before I met him, so I already was a fan. There are so many aspects to his imagery… there is humanity, honesty (sometimes brutal), regret, erudition, grief and eloquence. The man can write!

Over the years, Gil and I kept bumping into each other, until one night in Downey we hatched a plan to publish a book of his poems (something I had been meaning to do at least 10 years earlier). That was almost 5 years ago and it’s taken us this long to bring this book to fruition. I hate to use an alcohol metaphor since neither of us drinks but, poetry sometime needs to age (and the danker the cellar the better). And, trust me, this book is aged to perfection! I hope this collection wets your whistle. —RD Armstrong, Publisher
