About the Lummox Press

The Lummox Press began in 1994 as a self-publishing tool for RD Armstrong.  It allowed RD to publish two collections of his poems (Love is Dancing Just Out of Reach & Unkissed by the Angels).  Very soon after, towards the end of 1995, he started the Lummox Journal.

In 1998, the Lummox Press published its first anthology: DUFUS!  It wasn't quite as successful as one could have hoped for, but the learning curve kept RD honest. The book was a dismal flop, but it taught RD about quality control. DUFUS later became a poetry EZINE (2002).

Then, in 1999, He started the Little Red Book series or LRB.  LRB format was simple: a book that could fit easily into one's pocket or purse, and would give the reader the opportunity to read a selection of poems from known, as well as, unknown poets.  48 titles later, and poets still clamor to be a part of this series.

2004 saw the publication of LAST CALL: The Legacy of Charles Bukowski. The Lummox empire continues to spread.

Besides publishing, RD also is fairly active in the poetry scene,  giving readings in both Nor/SoCal.

About the Lummox Journal (print edition)

RD (Raindog to his friends) started the Lummox Journal in October 1995 after an unpleasant experience with a poetry festival in Long Beach, CA. It has been going strong, ever since. In the beginning, it was published every month, at least for the first eight years. Then, it was published every other month for two more years.  Finally, after eleven years, the Lummox Journal ceased as a print journal and made the jump to cyberspace.

Initially, the LJ was in a larger format than its current 'digest' form.  It was sold in a few stores around Los Angeles and had a limited subscription base.  "I always said that I'd do it as long as I had subscribers, but I never dreamed it would go on so long!"  So says RD.

In 1997, thanks in large part to YAZOOTA, the LJ became the piece of art that you see today.  His tireless efforts bring the wonders of HI-TECH computer graphics to the very LOW-tech world of small press publishing.

Over the years, the LJ became a forum where writers could express themselves freely.  Contributors included Todd Moore, whose essays on the state of the art of poetry have become a mainstay. In addition to interviewing over one hundred poets, artists & musicians during the past eleven years, the Lummox Journal also published hundreds of poems in its annual ALL POETRY issues (published each year in April).

Also, from 1996 to 2000, each August, the LJ published a special issue dedicated to the memory of Charles Bukowski, a poet who continues to be an influence on many of the poets who submit their work.  Some of these writers are featured in the book published in 2004 by Lummox Press.  That same year, in August, the Lummox Journal published it's 100th issue, a milestone of sorts.  The special issue featured excerpts from LAST CALL: The Legacy of Charles Bukowski an anthology of writing by some 42 writers/poets that RD believes shows the influence of Buk's work on the small press.  Purchase a copy from the Lummox Bookstore today!

In addition to publishing other poets/writers, as well as the work of visual artists such as Claudio Parentela and Norman J. Olsen, the Lummox Journal has been an outlet for RD's own version of his view of all things poetic (and then some), be it in his ongoing View from Down Here or his semi-regular contributions to the poetry that appears in nearly every issue.  You'd think he'd run out of topics to explore!

Join us online as we continue to explore all things POETIC.
