Back to the LUMMOX Journal DUFUS - A Poetry Journal |

A Brief History of the Lummox Journal RD (Raindog to his friends) started the Lummox Journal in October 1995 after an unpleasant experience with a poetry festival in Long Beach, CA. It lasted 11 years in a print format, before making the move to cyberspace. In the beginning, it was published every month, at least for the first eight years. Then, it was published bi-monthly. Initially, the LJ was in a larger format (8.5 by 11 inches) than its 'digest' form. It was sold in a few stores around Los Angeles and had a limited subscription base. "I always said that I'd do it as long as I had subscribers...but I never dreamed it would go on so long!" In 1997, thanks in large part to YAZOOTA, the LJ became the piece of art that it was to be known for. His tireless efforts brought the wonders of HI-TECH computer graphics to the very LOW-tech world of small press publishing. Over the years, the LJ became a forum where writers could express themselves freely. Contributors included Todd Moore, whose essays on the state of the art of poetry became a mainstay. In addition to interviewing over one hundred poets, artists & musicians during its eleven year run, the Lummox Journal also published hundreds of poems in its annual ALL POETRY issue (published each year in April). From 1996 to 2000, each August, the LJ published a special issue dedicated to the memory of Charles Bukowski, a poet who continues to be an influence on many of the poets who submit their work. Some of these writers were featured in the book, LAST CALL: The Legacy of Charles Bukowski, an anthology of writing by some 42 writers/poets that I believe show the influence of Buk's work on the small press, published in 2004 by Lummox Press (SEE LINK ABOVE). That same year, in August, the Lummox Journal published it's 100th issue, a milestone of sorts. In addition to publishing other poets and writers, as well as the work of visual artists such as Claudio Parentela and Norman J. Olsen, the Lummox Journal was an outlet for RD's own vision of all things poetic (and then some), be it in the ongoing View from Down Here or his semi-regular contributions to the poetry that appeared in nearly every issue. You'd think he'd run out of topics to explore! 2006 saw the final year of the print version of the Lummox Journal. It was a helluva long run, but it was time for the old dawg to "hang up his gloves" and move onto dawgy heaven, AKA cyberspace. So here's to a new beginning and a new presence on the web! |
